First Sunday of Advent: HOPE

Advent reflection for our students and families.

Jesus said to his disciples:

“Be watchful! Be alert!
You do not know when the time will come.
It is like a man traveling abroad.
He leaves home and places his servants in charge,
each with his own work,
and orders the gatekeeper to be on the watch.
Watch, therefore;
you do not know when the Lord of the house is coming,
whether in the evening, or at midnight,
or at cockcrow, or in the morning.
May he not come suddenly and find you sleeping.
What I say to you, I say to all: ‘Watch!’” Mk 13:33-37

Advent is all about preparation for the coming of Christ. This first Sunday of Advent might be a good time to center our attention on HOPE by noticing the gifts that surround us. One way to prepare our hearts for the coming of Christ is to simply open them to all that is truly good

Difficult to do at times, like during a pandemic, when lives are being turned upside down and inside out, for sure. But it is exactly in those times that HOPE comes in to illuminate God at work in us and around us.

When I read this passage, I imagine that we are being asked to simply be aware of the ways that God loves us. Whether it be in people, nature, our work or our pets, (whatever form it takes) it is always possible to find some gift of grace if you look attentively enough. It's just a matter of keeping our heart alert and watchful.

When we tune into those moments of grace, it is so much easier to HOPE. As Catholic Christians, it's important to try to move through all of this with ever grateful hearts because we are called to be a people of HOPE to others.

Mission: Throughout this week, try to practice paying attention and being grateful for all that God
provides for us.

Welcome to Advent! 😇
